Objective To investigate the current situation of smoking and its influencing factors so as to provide evidence for further tobacco control strategies. Methods A total of 3 955 students among 6 junior middle schools from Yongqiao District, Suzhou city were selected by stratified cluster sampling to conduct an anonymous questionnaire survey, then univariate analysis and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were employed to explore the potential influencing factors of smoking. Results The overall smoking rate of junior middle school students was 6.8%. Univariate Chi-square tests indicated that different gender, grade, pocket money, whether single-parent family, parental reminder, father's education level, parental smoking, peer smoking, whether being left-behind children, whether exposure to Internet cafes, awareness of tobacco harms and rank in class had effect on smoking rate with statistically significant difference. Multivariate Logistic analysis indicated that male, single-parent families, left-behind adolescents, parental smoking, low educational level of father, peer smoking, frequent exposure to Internet cafes were smoking risk factors (P<0.05), and lower grade, less pocket money, good scholarship, pass tobacco knowledge test were protecting factors (P<0.05). The pass rate of the tobacco harms knowledge was 61.01%, with an average score of 6.39±1.13, so that the students were lacking in professional knowledge of tobacco. Conclusion The prevalence of smoking in Yongqiao District in Suzhou is not optimistic, and the family environment is important influencing factors; the government, schools need to strengthen communication with parents of the students, and targeted strategies should be taken for the intervention. |
