Objective To investigate the status of the empathy ability, anxiety level and life stress among nurses, and to analyse the correlation between empathy ability of nurses and their anxiety level and stress, in order to provide evidence for the education and management of nurses. Methods A sampling questionnaire survey was conducted among nurses from five three-A Grade Hospitals in Anhui province using the Chinese version of Jefferson Empathy Scale, Self Rating Anxiety Scale and Life Event Stress Scale. The correlation analysis of 460 cases of three types of scales was carried out. Results The total scoring rate of nurse empathy ability was (102.64±12.34). The Self Rating Anxiety Scale score was (31.68±10.07). The Life Event Stress Scale showed that 67.6% of nurses felt the stress. The empathy ability of nurses was positively related to their age(r=0.590, P<0.05), and negatively related to anxiety level and life event stress scores(r=-0.357, -0.391, P<0.05).Conclusion The empathy ability of in-service nurses is overall at a moderate level, and the greater the anxiety level and life stress of nurses, the lower the empathy ability, which suggests that administrators should pay close attention to nurse mental health and set up multi-angle and multi-level training to improve the empathy ability of nurses. |
