Objective To investigate the clinical significance of Homeobox gene 5 (HOXA5) expression in adults with acute meloid leukemia. Methods The expression of HOXA5 genes of bone marrow samples from 108 newly diagnosed AML patients were examined by realtime quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RTQ-PCR) assay. Statistical ways were used to analyze the relationship between the treatment and prognostic factors and the expression of HOXA5. Results There was no significant difference between the untreated AML group and the normal group(P>0.05), primary-AML and secondary-AML (P>0.05), and the 60 years old-higher and 60 years old-lower(P=0.18) about the HOXA5 expression. The expression of HOXA5 was lower in complete remission group than in non-remission group in one standard induction therapy(P<0.05). In male and female groups statistically significant difference was found in the expression of HOXA5 (P<0.05). HOXA5 expression had no connection with CD34,HLA-DR,CD33,counts of WBC and LDH of the patients (P>0.05). Bone marrow progenitor cells had statistical significance in the expression of HOXA5(P<0.05). Conclusion The over expression of HOXA5 may result in poor treatment response in AML.
