Objective To explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the clinical characteristics of colorectal cancer patients. Methods The general information and clinical data of 1229 patients with colorectal cancer, hospitalized in our hospital from Jan 2011 to Dec 2013, were collected. Then all patients were divided into the low BMI group, the normal BMI group and the high BMI group according to their BMI, and differences in the clinical characteristics among the three groups were compared. Furthermore, the correlation between these clinical characteristics and BMI was analyzed. Results There were 173 cases (14.08%), 636 cases (51.75%) and 420 cases (34.17%) in the low BMI, normal BMI and high BMI groups, respectively. The differences of age, tumor size, tumor site, infiltration depth, lymph node number, number of lymph node metastasis, differentiation degree, tumor ascites among the three groups were all statistically significant (all P<0.05). Conclusion There exist certain relationship between BMI and clinical features of the colorectal cancer patients, and those adverse clinical features are associated with higher or lower BMI in colorectal cancer patients. |
